Food Stamps

SNAP is the new name for the Food Stamp program. SNAP is short for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.  If you qualify, you and your family will get a Benefit Security Card. You can use that card to buy most foods at the grocery store.

You cannot use the card to buy:

  • Detergent
  • Beer
  • Diapers
  • Pet food

Can I get Food Stamps?
It depends on your family income, money and other property. It also depends on the size of your family and if anyone is elderly or disabled.

Contact the Tennessee Department of Human Services (DHS) to find out if you qualify.

How do I apply for Food Stamps?
Apply at your county DHS office. They will ask you for information about your income, expenses and other documents. You can apply online or in person.
